Bartolomeu Dias Cross / Dias Monument
The Diaz Cross is located on Table Mountain, positioned strategically along the Cape Peninsula coastline, providing visibility over the surrounding sea and land for navigational purposes. The Diaz cross is a monument built to commemorate the voyage of Bartolomeu Dias in 1488. Dias is credited with the discovery of the Cape Peninsula by Europeans. It was originally a navigation marine beacon that was used along with the lower Da Gama beacon and two others that are located above the Simon’s Town Golf Course. The cross is historically significant as a symbol of early European exploration and maritime navigation in southern Africa.
