Addo Elephant National Park, the third-largest national park, is not only home to the traditional Big Five, but the Big 7, which includes the Southern right whale and Great white shark in its marine environment.

Situated a mere 30 minutes drive from the nearest large town and airport in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), the Park is perfectly situated to show off all its natural wonders with all who wish to visit – from the small flightless dung beetles to the hundreds of grey mammoths, the Park was formed to protect and so much more in between!

Activities at Addo abound – from self-drive game viewing, guided game drives and 4×4 trails to short walks and longer overnight hikes or simply bird watching or relishing in a relaxing spa treatment. Addo has it all!

Construction and upgrades10 April 2025

The following tourism updates are currently taking place:

  • Work on the eight new family chalets in Main Camp is nearly complete.
  • Six chalets in Main Camp are being upgraded.  Thereafter, the two guest houses will also undergo refurbishment. This project should be completed by August.
  • All the units at Nyathi Rest Camp are being upgraded and should be completed by September.
  • The unit that burnt down at Matyholweni rest camp is being rebuilt.

We request that guests kindly bear with us throughout these projects, the result of which will be new and improved accommodation offerings. Park Management apologises for any inconvenience caused.

Addo is cashless: All Addo Elephant National Park’s entrance gates (except Darlington) are now cashless28 February 2024

Please be advised that Matyholweni Reception no longer accepts cash payments.

While we strive to maintain uninterrupted services, especially Matyholweni occasionally experiences network outages. However, we are working on this with our IT team. In the event of a network outage at this gate on the day of a guest’s visit, they will be requested to complete their payment at Main Camp before exiting the Park.

To minimize delays and streamline their check-in process, we strongly encourage all guests to book and pay for their day visits online in advance – https://bit.ly/3QP2xgn. While this website displays as bookings for “Addo Rest Camp”, payment through any of the Park’s gates can be made here.

This convenient option allows guests to complete administrative tasks online, saving them time and effort upon arrival.

New Entry and Exit Arrangements13 March 2023

It’s been just over nine months since the new, stricter entry and exit measures were put in place at our gates in an effort to improve the safety and security of our visitors, staff, fauna and flora. This has entailed the scanning of every entering vehicle’s licence disc, as well as the driver’s license of the driver. We thank all our visitors who have understood the requirement over this time and complied.

These measures will be stepped up soon, to include the verification of all passengers over the age of 18. As of 1 April 2023, no one will be allowed to enter OR exit the Park without the VALID documentation as listed below, which must be made available for the gate staff on duty to scan.

  • Driver’s license (driver of the vehicle)
  • ID book/card/driver’s license for South African visitors (all persons/passengers over 18)
  • Passport (for international guests)
  • Valid vehicle license disk

NO DOCUMENT means NO ENTRY!

Please note that this applies to EVERYONE entering/exiting the Park:

  • All passengers in vehicles
  • Staff
  • Staff visitors (including pedestrians)
  • Official visitors
  • Contractors and their staff, including BSP
  • Delivery vehicles and their staff
  • Wild Card holders
  • Gorah and Riverbend concessions
  • Open safari vehicles
