Boulders Beach –Table Mountain National Park– is one of SANParks” best universally accessible destinations. The wide boardwalk takes all visitors, mobile and dependent on wheelchairs, right down to Foxy Beach and allows marvelous close-up views of the scores of African Penguins that call this place home.
However not all people who need a wheelchair have one. Many elderly people or the temporarily immobile do not have the resources to purchase a chair of their own. Boulders therefore had a wheelchair for hire for those guests who wanted to use one to travel down the boardwalk and see the penguins or move along Willis”s Walkway between the 2 main beaches at Boulders. Then unbelievably this wheelchair was stolen by some unscrupulous visitor.
Enter the iKapa Honorary Rangers. They are a newly formed HR region formed when the old Western Cape region split into Boland and iKapa. Their members are all based in the Cape Town area and aim to provide and promote a support for Table Mountain National Park and conservation in general. They learned of Boulder”s plight and as one of their first independent projects, they raised the funds to purchase a wheelchair and had it specially branded with the SANParks logo and the region”s name as the proud donor. This will hopefully help prevent a repeat of the previous theft.
