South African National Parks (SANParks) Northern Region hosted its Regional Awards on 15 October 2026, recognising employees who demonstrated outstanding performance, dedication and commitment to conservation and service excellence.

The Northern Region comprises Marakele National Park, Golden Gate Highlands National Park and Mapungubwe National Park, alongside regional teams that support the organisation’s operations.

A total of 69 recipients were recognised across various categories, including Excellent Performance in the Workplace, Best Customer Service, Lifetime Contribution, Research Initiatives and Innovation. The awards highlighted the diverse contributions of employees who advance SANParks’ mandate through their expertise, dedication and commitment to protecting South Africa’s natural heritage.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Lifetime Contribution Award to Mr Samuel Mathebula, in recognition of his 35 years of exemplary service and foundational leadership. As one of the original pioneers present at the inception of Mapungubwe National Park, Mathebula has played an instrumental role in shaping the park’s history and enduring success. His dedication, institutional knowledge and decades of operational excellence have helped establish a lasting legacy within the organisation. The award honoured his longstanding contribution to the park and the broader conservation sector.

The awards provided an opportunity to celebrate individuals whose efforts have contributed to effective park management, improved visitor experiences, conservation research and innovative approaches to the organisation’s work.

Through this initiative, SANParks reaffirmed its appreciation for the employees whose commitment and service play an important role in protecting South Africa’s natural heritage and connecting people to nature.
