R136.5 million in upgrades underway in Addo Elephant National Park

SANParks has invested R136.5 million into upgrading facilities and basic infrastructure in the Addo Elephant National Park, aimed at enhancing tourism infrastructure, visitor experiences, and operational sustainability.

Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, David Maynier, visited the new facilities and construction projects on Monday, 19 October 2026.

Minister Maynier said: “Having previously visited the Addo Elephant National Park, I am aware that there are many challenges that have been faced relating to the condition of basic infrastructure and facilities. I was pleased to see the scale of the work that is now underway, with numerous facilities planned for completion in time for the December holidays.”

A total of 8 new modern family accommodation units have already been completed and are open to the public, and comprehensive upgrades to the bulk sewer and electrical infrastructure have also been completed.

Additional new accommodation units, along with refurbished existing accommodation units, are planned to all be ready to open in December 2026, along with the refurbished guest house and swimming pool. A new spa has already been completed and is currently in operation.

A new 10-unit Community Lodge is expected to be completed by December 2026, with its official opening and commencement of operations planned for January 2027. The completed 705-kW grid-tied solar plant will also be commissioned in January 2027.

Road maintenance is also underway, while additional strategic projects are planned to further strengthen the Park’s tourism offering, support conservation objectives, and contribute to the long-term growth and sustainability of the Park.

While impressive progress is being made, there is still much work to be done, including urgent upgrades on ablutions and hiking trails which will now be prioritised by SANParks.

Minister Maynier had the opportunity to engage with visitors to the Park, who shared their views on the upgrades required to bring the Park up to international standards.

Minister Maynier said: “The guest experience must be a key focus of the revitalisation of our national parks, including the Addo Elephant National Park. Visitors should experience the very best South Africa has to offer in terms of quality accommodation and facilities, with options at multiple price points.”
