An intensive search operation in the Pretoriuskop section of the Kruger National Park (KNP) has ended in tragedy, following the discovery of human remains in Mestel Dam.

The incident began in the early hours of 28 August 2026 when Field Rangers intercepted four individuals allegedly engaged in illegal net-fishing. While three individuals complied with instructions and were safely taken into custody, a fourth entered the dam to evade arrest. Recognising the immediate danger of the water, teams launched an instant rescue operation, searching tirelessly for days inside and outside the park boundaries.

Tragically, the search ended on 31 August 2026 when monitoring rangers spotted human remains in the water. The deceased was recovered shortly after with the help of emergency services and the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The loss of a life under these circumstances is a profound tragedy that weighs heavily on everyone involved. Our hearts go out to the family and community navigating this painful loss. We also share our immense gratitude with the rescue teams who poured their energy into the gruelling search.

SAPS is now leading the formal investigation and forensic identification process to bring definitive closure to the family.
