South African National Parks (SANParks) celebrated a significant milestone in African conservation leadership with 30 staff members graduating as senior and emerging conservation leaders from the African Leadership University’s (ALU) School of Wildlife Conservation. This accomplishment follows the successful completion of the Certificate in Park Management Leadership.

Developed through a pioneering partnership between SANParks and ALU’s School of Wildlife Conservation, the Park Management Leadership Development Programme is the first programme of its kind in the world. It was established to cultivate a new generation of conservation leaders equipped to address the increasingly complex environmental, social and economic challenges facing conservation areas across the African continent.

The programme combines rigorous academic learning with practical, real-world application, ensuring participants develop the strategic leadership, adaptive management and systems-thinking skills required to lead conservation in the 21st century at a time when inclusivity and benefit-sharing is a globally recognised need.

While the graduation marks the successful completion of the programme’s first academic year, it also signals the beginning of the next phase. Graduates will now enter the second year through a structured mentorship programme designed to translate acquired learning into action. This phase will comprise implementation of projects, testing innovative solutions and strengthening conservation leadership within SANParks.

Today’s conservation leaders must be more than capable managers. They must be ethical decision-makers, collaborative leaders and champions of inclusive conservation who understand that managing biodiversity requires facilitating interconnected Mega Living Landscapes that support both ecological integrity and human well-being.

For more than a century, conservation in South Africa has often been shaped by approaches that separated people from nature. Through its Vision 2040, SANParks is advancing a more inclusive conservation model that recognises communities and stakeholders as essential partners in protecting the country’s natural heritage while promoting sustainable development.

The Park Management Leadership Development Programme is a strategic investment in developing future-ready leaders who can navigate a rapidly changing conservation landscape and ensure the long-term sustainability of South Africa’s protected areas.
