Prescribed Ecological Burn In Tsitsikamma Section Progressing Safely And On Track

The operation of a prescribed ecological burn in the Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National Park is progressing according to plan following the successful ignition on 08 May 2025.

The 800-hectare block, located northeast of The Crags and northwest of Nature’s Valley Rest Camp (De Vasselot), remains under control. The two flanks of the fire met late yesterday, and the fire is now burning safely within the designated block. Approximately 70% of the area has been successfully burned, with the remaining 30% expected to be completed by 17:00 today, weather conditions permitting.

Today’s weather remains favourable with safer conditions reported on-site. Additional personnel have been deployed to focus on managing smaller patches and ensuring a thorough burnout within the block. The border of the burn area is secure, and no fire has crossed the boundaries of the designated block.

The fire will continue to be monitored closely in the coming days, especially until sufficient rainfall is received to further mitigate any potential risks.

SANParks thanks all partners involved in this important ecological operation, including Mountain to Ocean (MTO) Group, Southern Cape Fire Protection Association, Bitou Local Municipality, Working on Fire, and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).

Prescribed burns are essential to maintaining the health and biodiversity of fynbos ecosystems. SANParks appreciates the public’s continued cooperation and understanding during this critical ecological intervention.
