|Ai-|Ais/RIchtersveld Transfrontier Park celebrated World Wetlands Day with 39 participants (34 kids and 5 educators) in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Nature Conservation (DENC) and the Eksteenfontein Community Development Worker (Richtersveld Municipality). The celebration took place on 20 February at the Port Nolloth Bird Park. The focus was on (i) Awareness on Wetlands, (ii) The importance and challenges of Wetlands (iii) Tourism attractions of Wetlands and (iv) Marine and Coastal awareness. Activities included a Wetland clean-up by the kids, a simulation of the dangers that plastic can cause, a climate change runner game and a tug-of-war (human versus nature) game.
SANParks provided transport for the learners from Eksteenfonstein to the Port Nolloth and the Richtersveld Municipality ensured that all the participants received a nutritious food parcel.
“We are fortunate that we have partners in the government sector that share our excitement and passion for environmental education. Kids need to learn about nature through real interactions with it, not from filling out stacks of worksheets about nature. That is why we take kids out of the classroom and into nature,” said Nadia Lemmetuis, SANParks Communications Manager for the Arid Region.
