Media Release: Take part in the Kruger National Park Management Plan review

The Kruger National Park (KNP) is beginning with the process of reviewing its Park Management Plan as from 18 April 2017, which is a requirement of the National Environment Management: Protected Areas Act No 57 of 2003 that stipulates that all protected areas must have management plans and review them every 10 years.

All interested members of the public are invited to take part or give input on the Plan through the website on www.sanparks.org as a start. Various structured meetings have been arranged and will take place in areas along the Park starting from Makuya in the Limpopo Province on 18 April 2017 ending at Ka-Mhlushwa in the Mpumalanga Province on 4 May 2017.

“SANParks' vision which reads 'a sustainable National Park system connecting society' is the cornerstone of the Park Management Plan and serves as a guideline for our engagements with stakeholders. Our first Park Management Plan was approved in 2008 and many people from our surrounding areas had great ideas on how the Park should be run and some of those ideas had the potential to mature into services offered. We hope the Park Management Plan review process will again inspire more ideas from our stakeholders,” said the SANParks Acting Head of Communications, William Mabasa.

Ten Stakeholder Engagement meetings for the three main regions found along the park which are Vhembe, Mopani and Ehlanzeni District Municipalities will take place at the following venues:

Details on how to register as a stakeholder are available either on the SANParks website:https://www.sanparks.org/conservation/park_man/ or from Dudu Letswele on telephone: 013 735 4102 between Monday and Friday during office hours. Stakeholders can also send an email to [email protected]

Mabasa also explained that “amongst other goals, the KNP Management Plan provides the strategic and operational framework for the management as well as the protection of the values and achieving the goals and objectives of the protected area in relation to the broader land use. The stakeholder engagement will also give us a chance as management to give feedback to the relevant stakeholders on the issues they raised in the previous Park Management Plan consultation”.
