Media Release: Rhino poaching update

Three alleged rhino poachers were arrested in the Tshokwane region of the Kruger National Park yesterday (6 June 2013). The group were found in possession of firearms and axes.

The arrests come as the number of rhino poached in South Africa for their horn since January 2013 has risen to 394.

The Kruger National Park continues to be the most seriously affected by rhino poaching, with 257 animals being killed in the Park since the beginning of the year.

In North West 46 rhino have been poached, while 35 have been killed in KwaZulu-Natal, 28 in Limpopo, 25 in Mpumalanga, 2 in the Eastern Cape and 1 in Gauteng.

Letaba Section Ranger Andrew Desmet, who was shot and wounded during a joint operation to arrest rhino poachers near Letaba two weeks ago, remains in a critical, but stable, condition in a Nelspruit hospital after undergoing surgery on Tuesday.
