In the meanwhile the cost of containing the multiple fires on Table Mountain National Park is still estimated at R5 million; however this excludes the cost of re-habilitation for Tokai and Silvermine. Approximately 6900 hectares of the Table Mountain National Park vegetation was burnt in the fire.
Upper Tokai Road and the Silvermine gates remains closed in the interest of the safety of the public. We understand that hikers, cyclist, horse riders and dog walkers are eager to use the area, but there are several trees damaged by the fire that are falling down.
Multiple teams from Table Mountain National Park (TMNP), Dept. of Environmental Affairs – Working on Fire teams as well as the Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS) are still onsite monitoring the area for possible flare ups. The direct cost of fighting the fires are currently estimated at R6 million. In addition, SANParks has issued a statement offering its sincerest condolences to the family of Mr. Willem Hendrick Marais, a WoF helicopter pilot who died tragically yesterday while fighting a wildfire in Cape Point.
