The Binoculars, donated by a generous forum member, Muhammed, will be given away in a lucky draw on Friday, 8 September 2006. To enter the draw, all you need to do is make a donation towards the purchase of vital Cyber Tracker Equipment for SANParks. This much needed and highly specialized equipment is used to record extensive data about the parks.Current CT equipment, generously donated by the Erna Goodwin estate in 2002, is reaching the end of its estimated lifespan of 3 years and has been damaged through normal wear and tear and encounters with dangerous animals. To date R9 600-00 has been raised. With another R1 800-00, there will be enough money to purchase 2 new units out of the 10 required…

The Kruger National Parks (KNP) CyberTracker System benefits both the management and scientific research of KNP by capturing data that assist with:

• the planning of section patrols for area-integrity management;
• acting as an early warning system for disease outbreaks;
• identifying trends in the exit and entry points of poachers;
• managing the control of invasive species and
• reporting fence-breaks to veterinary Dept for animal health purposes.
• These data also feed into existing KNP projects including Wild dog monitoring, Invasive species distribution, Varroa mite/Honey Bee monitoring, Fire management system, Archaeological inventory, Establishment of rare game and carnivore distribution and estimated totals etc..

CT equipment has become such an integral part of management and research in the Park that it would be devastating to conservation services if we could not replace the units.

However, the costs involved in replacing of 22 (sections) x 5 (units) = 110 units will far exceeded KNP budgetary limits (+ R5 500 per unit).
