12th edition of the Powerade Marakele Marathon is underway!

The stakes have been raised as the South African National Parks (SANParks) and SANParks Honorary Rangers are proud to host the 12th edition of the power-packed Powerade Marakele Marathon, which is dedicated to South Africa's famous 'Big Five'. After experiencing the disappointment of not being able to host the physical race in 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions, SANParks has decided to keep the spirit of the marathon alive by introducing a virtual marathon that is set to take place throughout the month of September.

Whilst addressing the impact Covid-19 has had on the marathon, Mphadeni Nthangeni, Park Manager of Marakele National Park said that “from the overwhelming queries we've received from our regular contestants, we realise that this marathon means a lot to the lovers of Marakele and lovers of conservation.”

This year, participants will be able to take part in the 2021 edition of the Marakele Marathon from the comfort and safety of their homes by simply registering on the Howler website. With 5km, 10km, 21km or 42 km options on offer, there's something for everyone, wherever you may be.

Important notes for this year's event:

In addition to participating in this unique experience, all participants will be entered into a lucky draw to stand a chance of winning a two-night stay at the incredible Tlopi Tented Camp at Marakele National Park. Two entries to the Skukuza and Marakele Marathons in 2022 will also be up for grabs.

All the proceeds of the marathon will go towards conservation efforts in the park.
