Masorini Hill
Masorini Hill is situated about 11 kilometres from the Phalaborwa Gate on the road to Letaba Rest Camp. The site is one of the most well-known archaeological sites within Kruger. It was occupied by the Northern Sotho speaking BaPhalaborwa who lived in the area during the 1800s. According to oral tradition, this 19th century group were the ancestors of the Ba-Phalaborwa people now living near the town of Phalaborwa. There is evidence that it was principally a group of smelters and smiths and their families that lived on this hill. This is evidenced by the discovery of dome-shaped clay furnaces, with skin bags at the end of the clay piping which were used as bellows. To present this history to the tourists, a site museum, huts, and an open-air restored furnaces are found at the site – where visitors can have an appreciation of life during the period in question.
