The blue-green algal bloom at Island Lake, in the Wilderness Section of the Garden Route National Park, remains active. Recent test results have confirmed the continued presence of the bacteria, which is known to potentially produce harmful toxins.
Algal blooms are influenced by various environmental factors, including changes in temperature, the breakdown of organic matter, nutrient cycling, and variations in freshwater flow.
Attached are satellite images showing the extent of the algal bloom in Island Lake captured on 12 March 2025 and 3 April 2025. The bloom appears to be isolated in Island Lake with no current evidence of similar activity in surrounding lakes. We continue to analyze the best available data to inform our ongoing assessment and response.
Island Lake will remain closed until it is declared safe for public use. South African National Parks (SANParks) will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide regular updates.
