Tourist Incident, Augrabies Falls National Park

South African National Parks (SANParks) was made aware of a missing visitor at Augrabies Falls National Park on 16 March 2026. The South African Police Service (SAPS) was immediately alerted and a comprehensive search operation within the Park was initiated.

On 18 March 2026, with authorisation from Park Management, the family of the missing tourist arranged an aerial and additional ground search. During this operation, a body was located off the Dassie Trail. The remains were subsequently identified as those ofthe 73-year-old, Mr. Schalk de Witt. SAPS coordinated the recovery of the body, and the matter has been referred to the relevant forensic authorities for further investigation.

SANParks extends its sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time. The matter has been handed over to the South African Police Services for further processing.
