TMNP Fire Contained, SANParks Thanks Public For Donations

The fire that broke out on the Newlands Ravine at Table Mountain National Park on Sunday morning has been contained.

There were no flare ups last night but teams will remain on the fire line today and tonight while we scale back operations and rest teams. We have ground crew on standby and ready to respond when necessary when the sun heats up later in the day.

Newlands Forest remains closed especially the contour path. The path is badly damaged and very unstable. The other trails on Devils Peaks and Platteklip to Mclears Beacon are open but we caution the public to remain on paths and not to try and enter the burnt area.

The South African National Parks (SANParks) wishes to thank the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services as well as Provincial Disaster Management for their assistance.

Our heartfelt thanks also goes to corporates and the public who donated so generously to the fire fighters. Many are volunteers who undertake this high-risk work in their spare time. The wildland fire fighters of TMNP and NCC work 24-hour shifts in the mountains and appreciate a warm meal and extra energy the donations provide especially in the cold dark hours of the night.
