Threat to our Indigenous wood

Beetles don't kill the tree, but they leave a fungus in the tree's vascular system. The fungus then blocks the vascular “tunnels”, that prevents water and nutrients from moving through the tree.

Implications for you as SANParks tourist:

  • Use Charcoal.
  • Do not transport or bring wood into National Parks from known infected areas (Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Gauteng, Bloemfontein, Hartswater, George and Knysna).
  • Purchase wood from immediate local area.
