The suspension bridge, located in the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park, is currently undergoing a planned reconstruction to ensure its safety, longevity, and continued enjoyment by future generations. The reconstruction is expected to be complete by the end of June 2026.
The suspension bridge is part of a 2 km hiking trail, featuring stable wooden paths and stairs suitable for visitors of all ages. Since its original construction in 1969, the bridge has provided visitors with breath-taking views of the Tsitsikamma forest and the Storms River gorge.
The project involves demolishing and replacing all superstructures of the three bridges while rehabilitating the supporting substructures. Deteriorated concrete will be removed and rebuilt using specialised repair mortars and protective coatings.
To ensure continued visitor access during construction, the work is being carried out in phases. Bridges 2 and 3 are currently closed and are scheduled to reopen on 23 March 2026. Once these bridges are open, visitors will be able to enjoy the trail safely while the main 77-metre bridge will be closed.
The main bridge will be closed from 24 March until 23 June 2026 for reconstruction, after which full access to all bridges and the trail will be restored.
Visitors are advised to adhere to all signage and safety instructions while enjoying the trail.
