SANParks Improves Food Security and Sustainable Livelihoods in the Richtersveld Community

South African National Parks (SANParks), through its Corporate Social Investment Programme, has launched the Greening and Food Security Programme on 05 March 2026 at Stephen Malherbe Primary School in Eksteenfontein, Northern Cape.

In response to funding constraints that impacted local soup kitchens serving more than 100 beneficiaries per town, SANParks has supported the establishment and expansion of sustainable food gardens to ensure a consistent supply of fresh produce. The initiative includes infrastructure such as shaded growing areas, 5 000-litre water tanks, irrigation systems, fencing, tools and skills development for youth participants.

In partnership with the Northern Cape Departments of Social Development and Agriculture, the project provides infrastructure, training and youth empowerment opportunities to ensure long-term sustainability, promote environmental stewardship and enhance livelihoods in vulnerable rural communities.
