Reopening of the Sendelingsdrift Pontoon

The Sendelingsdrift Pontoon at the ǀAi-ǀAis/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park is scheduled to reopen on 16 February 2026.

The pontoon has been closed since November 2025 due to high water levels in the Orange River, which made safe operations temporarily impossible. Following a steady decrease in water levels and thorough safety assessments, conditions are now suitable for operations to resume.

In preparation for reopening, SANParks teams, in collaboration with Namibia’s Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT) and the South African Police Service (SAPS), conducted clearing and safety checks at both landing sites to ensure operational readiness.

The reopening restores an important cross-border access point within the Transfrontier Park, supporting tourism and ongoing conservation cooperation between South Africa and Namibia.

Visitors are encouraged to ensure that all required travel documentation and park permits are in order prior to arrival.
