Senior Section Ranger for the Knysna Section (terrestrial/ forestry) of the GRNP, Nico Oosthuizen, says emergency cases often include dehydrated hikers, insect bites, ankle injuries and bruises, injured cyclists. In about three of these cases, air support services from Metro EMS: Eden is often necessary to lift patients from the rocky coastal areas. These areas are difficult to access on foot and it takes time to carry patients out on a stretcher.
The aim of the training session is to get both SANParks terrestrial/ forest rangers as well as EMS to familiarize themselves with the difficult rocky terrain. This would help simplify the aerial support structures necessary for any emergency situation. The terrain and vegetation as well as logistical challenges facing rescue teams was also addressed during the training. Access routes to the coastal section for helicopter landing were also clearly marked.
So says Oosthuizen “a follow up session is planned in the Sinclair/ Kranshoek area in April for additional training. It will delve into safety procedures required for aerial support as well as the management of the public or onlookers during an emergency or rescue operation”.
The Knysna Forest, also part of the GRNP, is home to the Harkerville Coastal Trail, the elephant trail and other day walks as well as mountain biking routes.
