The first signs of the world-renowned Namaqualand wildflower season are beginning to emerge, with Namaqua National Park already showcasing pockets of vibrant colour across its landscapes.

Thanks to early winter rains and consistently cool temperatures, dormant seeds have awakened, signalling the start of one of South Africa’s most anticipated natural spectacles. While the floral display is still in its early stages, favourable weather conditions have already transformed sections of the park into colourful carpets of spring blooms.

Visitors exploring the park can currently enjoy a variety of flowering species, including the Namaqualand Arctotis (Bittergousblom), Namaqua Parachute Daisy (Bergmagriet), Cape Marigold (Soetgousblom), Namaqualand Daisy, Sambreeltjies, Bokbaaivygies, Glansogies, Blue and White Sporries, Wit-soe, various Oxalidaceae (Suurrings), Duikerwortel, and several colourful vygie species.

Although flowering remains patchy in some areas, this is a positive indication that the season is steadily gaining momentum. If current weather patterns continue, visitors can expect the landscape to become increasingly vibrant over the coming weeks.

The annual flower season is expected to reach its peak between mid-August and mid-September 2026, subject to favourable weather conditions.

For the best flower-viewing experience, SANParks recommends visiting on sunny days when temperatures reach 18°C or higher, as most flowers open fully in warm sunshine.
