Over R50 Million Disbursed to SMMEs Supporting SANParks Procurement

A significant milestone has been reached in advancing access to finance for small businesses, with more than R50 million in loans disbursed to small, micro and medium enterprises (SMMEs) procuring within the South African National Parks (SANParks) ecosystem. The fund in partnership with Sanlam had disbursed R50.1 million by 28 May 2026, marking a major achievement in its mission to promote inclusive economic growth and enterprise development.

Launched as a R10 million pilot programme, the initiative has grown into a R50 million-plus impact fund in just two and a half years, following the disbursement of its first loan on 23 October 2023.

The fund, established through a partnership between Sanlam, SANParks, and implementation partner I AM AN ENTREPRENEUR (IAAE), provides interest-free, short-term working capital loans that enable SMMEs to fulfil purchase orders and successfully deliver goods and services to SANParks. By addressing critical cash flow constraints, the programme enables businesses to execute contracts, sustain operations, and participate more effectively in economic opportunities.

This support is particularly important in South Africa, where SMMEs contribute approximately 40% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and play a vital role in job creation and economic development. Despite their importance, many small businesses continue to face barriers in accessing affordable finance, limiting their ability to grow and compete.

This milestone represents far more than a financial achievement. It represents access, opportunity, and the tangible impact that innovative financing solutions can have on small businesses and communities.

The impact of the programme can be seen across multiple dimensions:

  • Entrepreneurs have been able to fulfil purchase orders and meet contractual obligations.
  • Businesses have gained access to affordable working capital when it was needed most.
  • Jobs have been sustained and created through continued business operations.
  • Enterprises have been empowered to participate meaningfully in economic opportunities.
  • Greater transformation and economic inclusion have been enabled within the SANParks value chain.

Behind every loan disbursed is a business owner striving for growth, employees whose livelihoods depend on sustainable enterprises, and communities benefiting from increased economic participation.

The milestone also reflects the dedication and commitment of the team responsible for delivering the programme. Their efforts, from loan assessments and stakeholder engagement to site visits, reporting, monitoring, and ongoing support, have been instrumental in ensuring the fund’s success.

As the programme celebrates the achievement of surpassing R50 million in disbursements, its focus remains firmly on expanding access to finance and unlocking opportunities for even more SMMEs in the years ahead.
