SANParks has confirmed there is a fire in Karatara which is monitored by MTO/Cape Pine, its own staff, landowners and the local Fire Association.
“Our rangers are out with various stakeholders including MTO/ Cape Pine and others to assess the area. A fixed wing plane will also go out at 11:00m to confirm the extent of the fire and how far it has spread” according to Paddy Gordon, Park Manager of the Garden Route National Park.
There is a suspicion the fire started in the mountain as a result of a lighting strike and was exacerbated by berg winds. Team are going out with a fixed-wing plane to gather more information at 11:00am this morning.
