From a profile perspective the event attracts a number of Olympic champions (Gold, Silver and Bronze medallists from the Olympics) and is recognised by the UCI (International Cycling Body) as one of the top extreme cycling events in the world. Woolworth sponsors this event and the sponsorship entails the management and supply of food and drinks in the Recovery Zone, Top-up Meals for riders and their food requirements at the water points along the route.
A number of Woolworth employees and Woolworths suppliers participate in the event. This year we had an amazing amount of interest and ended up with ten teams entered. The teams in conjunction with our suppliers raise funds through their participation in the event. This year the Woolworths team decided to support the SANParks Honorary Rangers anti-poaching initiative, by sponsoring the acquisition of another specialised anti-poaching dog for operation within the Kruger National Park.
The training of a dog and its handler costs approximately R80 000. Each dog is also fitted with a tracking collar costing an additional R18 000. Diane Brooks, member of Table Mountain Region of the SANParks Honorary Rangers accepted a cheque of R98 000 from Craig McHendrie of Woolworths, on behalf of the SANParks Honorary Rangers.
