Media Release: Update On Availability Of Accommodation In The Kruger National Park

1. The following restcamps were re-opened on 28 February 2000 and are functioning normally:

  • Berg-en-dal
  • Lower Sabie
  • Skukuza (Please note that the dinning facilities are now located at the old Selati railway station)
  • Pretoriuskop
  • Nwanetsi
  • Satara
  • Orpen
  • Olifants
  • Letaba
  • Shingwedzi
  • Punda Maria
  • Tambotie
  • Maroela

2. The restcamps listed below are scheduled to open according to the dates indicated:

  • Crocodile Bridge – 6 March 2000
  • Byamiti – 17 March 2000
  • Jock of the Bushveld – 10 March 2000
  • Roodewal – 6 March 2000
  • Balule – 10 March 2000
  • Shimuwini – 30 June 2000
  • Boulders – 24 March 2000
  • Mopani – 20 March 2000
  • Bateleur – 24 March 2000
  • Talamati- 10 March 2000
  • Jakkalsbessie – no decision

3. Road communication between the northern and southern parts of the Park should be restored by 24 March 2000 when repair work on the high water bridges across the Sabie and Letaba rivers is to be completed. The high water bridge across the Sabie River at Kruger Gate should also be re-opened for traffic on 24 March 2000.

4. At this stage, it is not known when the low water bridges across the Crocodile (at Crocodile Bridge restcamp), Sabie (at Lower Sabie restcamp), Sand, Olifants (at Balule restcamp) and Letaba Rivers will become accessible for motor vehicles.

5. The SANP takes this opportunity to thank the public for their support of the Kruger National Park Disaster Fund. This major fundraising initiative is going well, and the SANP will, in due course, give appropriate public recognition to the many individuals and organisations that have given so generously to the Kruger. For members of the public or organisations who are still interested in making contributions, the details of the fundraising initiative are as follows:
