South African National Parks (SANParks) Rangers were bestowed with the Umhlobo Wenene honour by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Pontdrift Military Base for their bravery and courage displayed when dealing with cross border crimes at an event that took place at Pondrift, near Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site.

On a daily basis the rangers in Mapungubwe are confronted with illegal border jumpers and poachers amongst others. Major Williams who is the base commander and officiated the ceremony said “The work that we do would not be successful without the assistance of the Mapungubwe rangers – we therefore take them as our true friends and support system in helping us fight the crime in our area”.

According to the Mapungubwe Park Manager, Mr Conrad Strauss, the SANParks rangers and that of the transfrontier partners have a great working relationship. He said “crime in the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Park is always dealt with in collaboration with the various stakeholders. Sometimes it”s challenging but the Transfrontier rangers from Zimbabwe, South Africa and Botswana never let something escape their keen sense and dedication. They are true unsung heroes”.

Strauss concluded by saying that they appreciate the “Umhlobo Wenene” gesture that was bestowed on them and further promised that together they will ensure that they continue to protect the area as that is their primary mandate.
