General Manager for the Garden Route National Park (GRNP), Jill Bunding-Venter says the team”s hard toil has paid off. “They set meetings for the year and stick to them! They work extremely well with our team in the Tsitsikamma section of the GRNP, from educational initiatives to making the Park look beautiful and accessible to visitors.”
Theo Engelbrecht, the Chairperson of Honorary Rangers in Tsitsikamma was stunned by the news. “I was shocked when Tsitsikamma was announced at the Honorary Rangers Indaba as the Region of the year. I never expected it because we are a relatively smaller Region than others. I was always under the impression that a small region has no chance against the big guns. This made me very proud of our region and I want to thank all our members who worked hard and were part of this achievement.”
Criteria for the awards consider the following factors: “The growth in membership of both existing and new applicants, the numbers of previously disadvantaged members (pro-transformation), an increase in service delivery and inputs in the Park as well as self -development and environmental education in general.”
Statistics from the Honorary Rangers National Office indicate an increase in the following areas: Environmental education (30,3%), a 21, 04% in direct contribution, a 200% of inclusion of Historically Disadvantaged Individuals (HDIs).
“The doors of Tsitsikamma Honorary Rangers are open to all who want to make a difference and want to be part of conserving nature. We invite those to join and work for this good cause. The rest of the community, who cannot join us are encouraged to take the time to interact with some of our members and try and spot areas of possible involvement.” he adds.
