Media Release: Tracker ambushed by lions close to Marakele National Park

A male tracker was tragically mauled to death by two young male lions on Sunday, 7 March 2021, close to Marakele National Park, Thabazimbi, in Limpopo.

This according to Marakele National Park manager, Mphandeni Nthangeni who said he received a call early on Sunday morning informing him about an incident involving a tracker mauled by lions in the contractual land within the national park.

Nthangeni said the two lions had to be taken down immediately for post-mortem … “and at this stage, the South African Police Services has taken over the scene and the investigation is currently ensuing.”

Reacting to the news, South African National Parks Chief Executive Officer, Fundisile Mketeni said “this incident has left us distraught and condolences to the family, friends and staff at Marataba Contractual Park during this difficult time.”
