Media Release: Tourist Roads Closed for Ranger Demonstration

Three tourist roads in the Malelane Entrance Gate/Berg en Dal Rest Camp area of the Kruger National Park (KNP) will be temporarily closed on Thursday, May 22, 2008 to ensure visitor safety during a ranger demonstration from KNP Entrance Gate opening time (06:00) until the end of the demonstration at 11:00.

“We apologise in advance to our guests who have planned to visit the area on that day for any inconvenience, but assure that the roads will only be closed for those five hours,” said the KNP’s Managing Executive Dr Bandile Mkhize.

The roads affected will be the S110 tar road between Berg en Dal Rest Camp and the turn-off from the H3 (near Malelane Entrance Gate), the S110 “Matjulu” gravel road and the S120 “Steilberg” gravel road.

Closures are necessary to ensure visitor safety during a ranger demonstration as part of the 2008 Ranger’s Day. This demonstration will include the firing of live ammunition.

Guests that have booked into Berg en Dal Rest Camp during that period will be informed of the options available to them as and when they book into the camp. Other visitors – who will not be allowed access to Berg en Dal Rest Camp during that time period – are urged to visit alternative camps and picnic places in the region, which include Afsaal Picnic Site, Pretoriuskop Rest Camp and Skukuza Rest Camp.

KNP Ranger’s Day is an annual event in the park where the four regional rangers, 22 section rangers and over 200 field rangers demonstrate their skills to selected guests.
