Media Release: Tokai/cecilia Public Engagement Process On Track

A few months ago, Table Mountain National Park committed to a public engagement process around the future of Tokai and Cecilia plantations. The public engagement process which forms part of the Environmental Management Framework, was subject to funding becoming available. Such funding has since been secured, and a team of consultants has been appointed to oversee the process.

The future of Tokai and Cecilia plantations has proved to be of great interest to the general public. In April last year, the Department of Water Affairs assigned to SANParks, in terms of the National Forests Act, the management of more than 1000 hectares of publicly owned land within the Cape Peninsula Protected Natural Environment (CPPNE) area. TMNP has taken over the management of the Tokai and Cecilia plantations and the “˜exit lease’ whereby the forestry company, MTO Forestry (PTY) Ltd., has the right to harvest about 600 hectares of pine plantations over a 20 year period.

In terms of the assignment, SANParks is mandated to effect the long term management and rehabilitation of the Tokai and Cecilia plantations. In order to carry out this mandate, TMNP is committed to develop an overarching Environmental Management Framework (EMF) which will provide opportunity for public, specialist and management input.

The EMF for Tokai/Cecilia is being done in conjunction with the revision of the core planning documents of Table Mountain National Park. These are the Park Management Plan and Conservation Development Framework (CDF). Last week, adverts were placed, calling on stakeholders to register as interested and affected parties. Anyone who wishes to register can obtain the relevant documentation online at http://www.tmnp.co.za/ and send the completed form to the addresses stated on the form OR, sending an email with the heading “Registration for TMNP process” to [email protected] and then returning a completed registration form that will be sent to you OR, completing a registration form at the TMNP head office, Shop 1, Westlake Square, cnr of Westlake Drive and Steenberg Road.
