Tatasberg, one of just two wilderness camps in the |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, has been closed indefinitely due to a fire that broke out a few meters from where four beautifully constructed chalets are lined up next to the Orange River.
The blaze broke out at the field guide”s living quarters on Saturday (8 April 2017) morning, just after the last guests left the vicinity. Fortunately the rest of the camp's facilities has not been affected by the fire as the staff member on duty acted swiftly and efficiently to bring the fire under control. The water supply and solar power system were largely affected by the fire, hence the subsequent closure of the wilderness camp.
Hospitality Manager, Hendrik Prins, said it is a very unfortunateincident, but he”s glad that the guests and staff member were unharmed. An investigation will be conducted to establish the exact cause of the fire.
Guests who are booked to stay at the camp in the near future were informed about the incident. Contingency plans are in place to accommodate them elsewhere in the Park should they be willing to be transferred.
