South African National Parks in partnership with the South African Police Service and Departments of Social Development and Education in the Western Cape are collaborating on a skills development programme for primary schools learners from Beaufort West.
A total of 91 learners from Teske Memorial, Beaufort West and St Matthews Primary Schools have already participated in the programme, with learners from at least two other local schools also expected to visit soon. The plan is that an adjusted programme will be offered to high school learners in future.
The venue of the weekend-long sessions is Karoo National Park’s Grantham Environmental Education Centre. During this time, topics covered include leadership, team building, conflict management, career guidance, substance abuse, teenage pregnancies and veld interpretation. Alongside these themes, the organisers have included various group sessions, fun activities and games as well as a three-hour walk in the veld.
