He said a lot of progress has been made particularly in the areas of co-management of national parks with communities living adjacent to national parks.
Mogakane further congratulated SANParks for its strategy in dealing with damage-causing animals leaving the parks and often resulting in the killing of livestock or even resulting in loss of human lives and damaging crops. “SANParks successfully assisted in setting up a People and Parks provincial structure in the Free State.”
The 6th People & Parks Conference is currently being held in Umtata in the Eastern Cape from 8 to 11 September 2014. The conference is attended by amongst others Ministers of Environmental Affairs, Edna Molewa, Rural Development & Land Reform, Gugile Nkwinti as well as the Chairperson of the Environmental Affairs Portfolio Committee, Jackson Mthembu.
