Angela Isaks, SANParks People and Conservation Manager said “SANParks is committed to helping the community in line with our vision statement of “Connecting to Society” and Griqua Cricket getting involved with this initiative is an exciting development. SANParks views the involvement of communities in the management of parks in the 21st century as vitally important – National Parks cannot continue to be an island within communities.” SANParks is currently building a cricket pitch at Welkom Primary School which will be used during the upcoming annual SANParks Cricket Tournament which will be held in March.
Griqua Cricket Schools and Youth Cricket co-ordinator, Roy Williamson said that they want to develop the game of cricket in the Kgalagadi area and this is the perfect platform to do so. “We need to encourage our children to play sport and by getting involved with SANParks Cricket, we have been able to touch the lives of another community through their children and the sport of cricket.”
In showing their commitment to the development of sports in disadvantaged communities, Griqua Cricket Union, who will also be at the annual cricket event, presented the Kgalagadi Community team with R10 000.00 worth of cricket equipment.
SANParks will be batting for the community from 14 – 17 March 2013 at the annual cricket tournament. The public is invited to join in the fun at Welkom Primary School and see the Kgalagadi Community team battle for the top spot.
