The project which began in 2015 has ensured a great improvement towards visitor experience by ensuring proper surfaces for even sedan vehicles to all major areas such as Leokwe Rest Camp, Treetop walk, Confluence as well as the river road against the Limpopo river.
These upgrades also included newly constructed signposts which will guide visitors much more effectively through the Park. The signposts project was made possible through funding received from the National Department of Tourism.
“We are very excited about these new developments in the Park, as visitors will be able to explore all areas of the Park for wildlife viewing or just enjoy the incredible ancient landscape of this World Heritage Site”, said Conrad Strauss, Mapungubwe National Park Manager.
As far as the Park”s future plans are concerned, many projects such as the upgrade of the reception area at the Main gate, staff village, office blocks, ablutions at Mazhou campsite, possible reception at Limpopo Forest tented Camp, signage in the Western Section are in the planning phase.
Mapungubwe National Park is situated 70 km outside the town of Musina and is the first African Kingdom in Southern Africa. The rich, extra-ordinary history that is found in this area led to its declaration as world heritage site in 2004. The Confluence, where two rivers (Shashe and Limpopo) as well as three countries (South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe) collide, can be perfectly viewed when one visits Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site.
