Thursday, 3 July 2008 – Proactive staff members of Table Mountain National Park helped a British tourist recover stolen goods at Cape Point on Wednesday, 2 July. The tourist had been taking photographs when a man was seen picking up camera equipment and driving off with it.

TMNP staff at the Buffelsfontein Visitors Centre were contacted by the victim’s daughter who in turn notified the Section Ranger and Field Rangers with the details of the car and incident. In response to the incident SANParks TMNP staff set up a road block at the Cape of Good Hope main gate to check for the vehicle but unfortunately they were just too late to stop the vehicle in question.

The South African Police Services were contacted as well and they set up road blocks outside the TMNP and the suspect and car was stopped along Plateau Road just outside the Park. The accused was taken to the COGH main gate where the equipment was identified by the victim and returned to him. Being from overseas and receiving the equipment back he chose not to press charges of theft so no docket has been opened. The accused is a citizen of Spain.

The Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) would like to warn visitors to the Park to be careful and watch out for suspicious looking characters as a group of five women and a 12 year old boy were mugged by two knife wielding attackers yesterday morning.

The group of dog walkers was on a return walk in Black Hill on the boundary of Solole Game Reserve. The incident has been reported at the Oceanview police station. The TMNP will step up foot patrols in the area. Visitors to the park are urged to report all incidents by calling the Park’s helpline at 086 110 6417, which is a 24 hours a day and seven days a week.
