South African National Parks (SANParks) is saddened by the death of its former CEO Dr Robbie Robinson who passed on 15 May 2017 following few years of ill health.
Dr Robinson joined the then South African National Parks Board as a Marine Biologist in 1966. He served as Park Warden in various parks including Tsitsikamma, where he established the well-known Otter trail. Otter trail is one of the hiking trails found in the Garden Route. It is located along the Storms River Mouth in a very scenic landscape. Amongst his accomplishment include the establishment of the first community owned park in Richtersveld.
Dr Robinson was appointed as the CEO in 1990, the position he occupied until 1997. He will be remembered for the role he played in the park expansion programme largely in the Western Cape.
Reacting to his death, Mr Fundisile Mketeni, SANParks CEO expressed his deepest condolences to the family and friends of Dr Robinson. “SANParks is forever indebted in his skills as one of the individuals who played an important role in the development of the national parks system in South Africa. We thank his family for giving us the man of his calibre,” he said.
