Media Release: New SANParks Board Appointed

At its meeting of 22 March 2006, Cabinet approved the appointment of a new Board for the South African National Parks (SANParks). The Board members have been appointed for a period of three years, commencing on 1 April 2006.

“Our parks require firm leadership with both vision and sensitivity, to ensure that they continue to grow, representing the biodiversity, landscapes, and heritage assets of South Africa for the sustainable use and benefit of all our people,”said Marthius van Schalkwyk, Minister of Environmental Affairs & Tourism.

The Board consists of the following appointees:

1. Ms. C Carolus (Chairperson)
2. Dr. Nombasa Tsengwa
3. Dr. Robert Scholes
4. Ms. Mantuka Maisela
5. Mr. Murphy Morobe
6. Mr. Zakhele Sithole
7. Prof. Willem van Riet
8. Ms. Lindiwe Sangweni-Siddo
9. Ms. Yoliswa Makhasi
10. Mr. Fundisile Mketeni (DEAT representative)
11. Dr. David Mabunda (CEO SANParks)
12. Ms. Nombulelo Hlolinhlanhla Mkumane (SANParks Chief Financial Officer)

The Minister wished the newly appointed Board every success in leading the further development of the national parks system. “The role of SANParks has never been of greater importance,” said the Minister. “With both biodiversity and tourism priorities ever closer to the centre of South Africa’s growth strategies, we increasingly find the traditional divisions between the interests of conservation and the interests of communities blurring and disappearing.
