Media Release: New Hostel Opens for Skukuza School Pupils

The Managing Executive of the Kruger National Park (KNP), Dr Bandile Mkhize officially opened a new hostel for pupils attending the Skukuza Primary School today (Wednesday October 3, 2007).

“The KNP is responsible for everything that happens within the boundaries of the park and the education of staff members” children is part of that responsibility,” said Dr Mkhize during his opening speech.

Converted from an unused staff house nearby the Skukuza Primary School, the hostel will accommodate 26 primary school pupils made up of 14 girls and 12 boys. The hostel includes a live-in matron – tasked with looking after the children – and facilities where the pupils can do their homework.

The facility has been created to ease the plight and improve the learning environment for the Skukuza Primary School pupils who presently live with their parents in the Skukuza Staff Living Quarters.

“The rooms in the living quarters are not ideal and we would like to create a better environment for the children,” added Dr Mkhize.

Apart from KNP Technical Services, who converted the house into a hostel, the main sponsor of the project was SANParks business partner Vuswa/Avis Fleet Services, who donated R120 000 for furniture and other fittings in order to make the hostel as comfortable as possible for the pupils.

“We must always be reminded that we walk into the future on the feet of our children and if we don”t have feet, how can we have a future,” concluded Dr Mkhize.
