Media Release: Mikosi heads to Robben Island as part of International Tourist Guides’ Day

The renowned tourist guide, Sidney Fhumulani Mikosi will again be in the spotlight when he joins other tour guides around the country as part of the International Tourist Guides” day that will take place on 3 and 4 March 2017 at Robben Island.

Mikosi who is based at Marakele National Park as Head Guide, rose to fame when he won the national Lilizela Award in 2016. According to the Marakele Park Manager, Mr Mphadeni Nthangeni “This young man is an expert in nature guiding and we are proud that he will join the Department of Tourism to share his expertise with the guiding fraternity”

This day is commemorated each year with activities such as excursions and motivational talks to encourage everyone in the field and “we hope that many up-and-coming guides will be inspired to do well as they (guides) help to transfer knowledge from one generation to the other”, said Nthangeni.

In his own words, Mikosi said “This is another opportunity that adds to my career achievements in that I don”t only get to share my knowledge with the clients in the park, but also with the rest of the country, I am ever grateful to SANParks for the opportunity they have given me to broaden my knowledge in nature”.

Sidney has been with Marakele National Park since 2009 and boasts several accolades to his name including the Limpopo Provincial Lilizela, National Lilizela as well as SANParks” CEO Awards, all of which he received in the year 2016.

Most of the clients who have been on a game drive with Sidney describe him as the jungle encyclopedia. They say “his passion and enthusiasm always stand out whenever he is on duty and his knowledge unparalleled.”
