Media Release: Mapungubwe Arts Festival Launched at the home of the Golden Rhino

The festival is an Arts & Culture event which is held for a week in December to showcase the artistic expertise of Limpopo Province and the country at large. It is at this festival that the Cultural heritage of South Africa is celebrated. It is used for the purpose of setting a stage for both the renowned and the upcoming artists through exhibitions, play, drama and culminates into Gospel and Jazz festival.

Over and above, events like this positively contribute towards improving the economic growth of the region through tourism and also afford people the opportunity to deliberate on their culture and heritage. When the festival was first launched, it would rotate from one district to the other throughout Limpopo to allow the people of Limpopo to get a feel of what the festival had in store for them.

This year, however the Province decided to take the launch to the home of the Golden Rhino. “We promote Mapungubwe as a renowned World Heritage Site in our Province because of the rich history in this area. We decided to name our festival after this beautiful landscape and the symbol of our event is the golden rhino which was discovered on Mapungubwe Hill and therefore it was befitting that we bring the 2015 launch right here so the people can have a full picture of what Mapungubwe is all about” said the MEC, Nandi Ndalane in her key-note address.

The 2015 Mapungubwe Arts festival takes place from 4th – 12th December 2015.
