Speeding tops the list of offences with 526 fines issued, while 285 fines were issued for other offences such as littering, protruding or alighting from a motor vehicle in an undesignated area and reckless driving. A motorist was caught driving at 111 km/h on a 50 km/h zone between Satara and Orpen in the central part of the park. This was the highest speed recorded.

Mr Sibiya continued to encourage everyone to obey the rules and regulations of the park. “No one is above the law, if you think you can come and disregard the rules of the park, our law enforcement officers will deal with you accordingly. This park is for visitors to experience and explore nature without any disturbance” commented Sibiya.

All the fines were issued in line with the National Environmental Management; Protected Areas Act (NEMA), 57 of 2003 and National Road Traffic Act (NRTA).

“We hope this sends out the message to those individuals who think they can break the law and get away with it. We are serious about the safety of our visitors in the park and encourage people to make use of our emergency number 013 735 4325 to report those who break the rules. Our law enforcement officers cannot be everywhere all the time, hence we urge the public to assist” he said.

Furthermore, he praised visitors who made use of the emergency number to report rule breakers. “We urge visitors to familiarise themselves with rules and regulations of the park as stated in the green permit that they receive at the gates to avoid being on the wrong side of the law” concluded Sibiya.

The number of fines issued in December 2012 has increased dramatically compared to 410 in December 2011.
