Media Release: KNP honours Mandela through Charity

The Kruger National Park (KNP), in conjunction with the farming enterprise and fresh produce company ZZ2, handed over parcels to Mahlathi home-based care in Giyani; in honour of the late former President, Nelson Mandela, on 16 July 2021. Sunday, 18 July 2021 was Nelson Mandela's birthday, and South Africa will be celebrating his life throughout the month.

This year's theme for the Nelson Mandela International Day is ” one hand can feed another” which seeks to empower communities everywhere; whist the Nelson Mandela Day goals for 2019-2029 are Education and Literacy, Food and Nutrition, Shelter, Sanitation and Active Citizenship.

” The idea was to spend the whole day at the facility in an effort to mobilise the community, in particular, the youth to raise awareness on issues such as environmental crime, socio-economic issues etc., however, due to COVID 19 restrictions it was not possible. We however still committed ourselves that as a tribute to our beloved Madiba, we should share the little we have with the Mahlathi home-based care centre, which is in need of basic necessities as it caters for about 90 community members of various ages on daily basis,” said KNP's General Manager of Communications and Marketing, Isaac Phaahla.

As an organization, the KNP donated 50kg of meat and 90 x 5kg soft porridge whilst the sponsor, ZZ2 sponsored approximately 48 bags of fresh veggies (potatoes, cabbages, beetroot, butternuts, onions, and tomatoes) as well as 100kg mealie meal and 8 bags of chicken meat to the facility.

“Mandela will forever remain an inspiration to nations all over the world, and the coronavirus situation has brought an opportunity for us as a country to show more empathy and care for one another no matter how small the gesture is,” concluded Phaahla.

People around the world can devote at least 67 minutes to a good cause; one minute for each year Mandela devoted to worthy causes since he began his struggle for the liberation of all South Africans, from political, social and economic division.
