Media Release: Kids in Parks heading to Camdeboo National Park

Starting next week, for a period of six weeks, 500 learners and nearly two dozen educators will descend on Camdeboo National Park around Graaff-Reinet for their annual Kids in Parks programme. Each school”s three-day field trip is co-sponsored by Pick “n Pay and the Departments of Education and Environmental Affairs.

Kids in Parks provides opportunities for Grade 6 learners and educators to use national parks as learning environments. Approximately 5 000 learners per year from disadvantaged communities visit national parks on the programme. Furthermore, learner support materials aligned to the national school curriculum are developed to strengthen the youngsters” educational experiences. The field trip also acts as workshops for educators on topics such as environmental ethics.

This year, the programme in Camdeboo runs from 20 February until 29 March. The Park”s People and Conservation Department, assisted by their colleagues in Conservation, will lead each group of 50 children and their accompanying educators over their three days. They will be based at the Parks” Environmental Education Centre, where most of their activities will take place. Exciting outings and excursions to the Park”s game viewing area and Valley of Desolation are on the cards, as well as swimming (weather permitting), lots of fun games and going on walking trails while learning about ecology, the animals of the Park and conservation at the same time.
