Media Release: Free entry week to Karoo National Park
South African National Parks will once again, for the 12th year, open its gates to all South African day visitors at no cost from Monday 18 to Friday 22 September, during SA National Parks Week (SANPW). Karoo National Park, just outside Beaufort West, will extend this to the first 100 guests on both the Saturday and Sunday thereafter – 23 and 24 September.
Parks in the Frontier Region of SANParks, namely Addo Elephant (outside Port Elizabeth), Camdeboo (surrounding the town of Graaff-Reinet), Mountain Zebra (near Cradock), Karoo and Garden Route National Parks are readying to welcome visitors in their droves. The initiative, in partnership with Total SA and FNB, is in line with SANParks” vision statement of “A sustainable National Park System Connecting Society”.
Karoo National Park is well known for the beautiful vista”s and scenery it offers. Visitors to the Park during SANPW can enjoy this, as well as self-drive game viewing, birding, 4×4 trails, picnics and visits to the Interpretive Centre and Fossil Trail at no cost.
Since its inception in 2006, SA National Parks Week, under the theme “Know Your National Parks”, has seen an influx of over 286 935 day visitors in all participating parks. The week was established in a bid to cultivate a sense of pride in South Africa”s natural, cultural and historical heritage, protected by the national parks system.
The initiative grants free access to most of the 21 national parks for day visitors, especially people from the local communities. It should be noted that free access to parks does not include free access to accommodation facilities and other paid-for tourist activities.
As part of SA National Parks Week, Karoo”s People and Conservation Department will be facilitating visits to the Park for a number of surrounding community and school groups, offering them a chance to experience what they usually would not have been able to.
