The five were arrested after two vehicles, suspected of being involved with rhino poaching activities in the KNP, were stopped and searched. A .375 hunting rifle, silencer, and ammunition and other poaching related equipment were recovered in the successful operation.
Paul Daphne, Head of Communications for SANParks, said the proactive joint actions of all involved had paid off and that the possibility of more arrests could not be ruled out as follow-up investigations are underway. “This is a clear indication of the cohesive effect of the NATJOINTS initiative in the Park and that cooperation and joint operations are essential if we are to defeat the criminal syndicates. We would like to congratulate all those involved in this arrest and wish them more success” concluded Daphne.
The arrest of the five suspects brings the total of those arrested inside the KNP in connection with poaching activities this year to a record 104.
