Media Release: Camdeboo holiday programme loads of fun for children

An average of 30 children per day participated in the environmentally-themed programmes which aimed to encourage children to learn about the natural world through fun and exciting games.

“Awesome Ocean Wednesday” introduced learners to the wonders of the ocean through fun games and activities in Camdeboo Environmental Education Centre”s very own swimming pool “ocean”. Geared with lessons on how the ocean benefits us and what can be found in the sea, learners dived for ocean animals and played shark attack, along with other games, to reinforce what had been learnt.

Thursday, which was a day of all things green, proved to be fun despite the rain. The children embraced “Grassy Green Thursday” wholeheartedly, with green outfits, green lunch packs and dyed green hair! Task included making Mr. and Mrs. Grass heads: stockings filled with grass seeds and compost. After lessons on how to take care of their own little patch of grass, the children were sent home to watch the grass grow, hoping that January will yield hair on the bald heads.

Friday “Boere Sport Day” was a real treat! Activities were designed to boost the children”s teamwork skills and included eating toffee apples off a string in pairs, finding smarties in flour and bobbing for apples. The egg race proved easy for the eager children but the tossing of the egg was a real challenge and resulted in Camdeboo National Park staff covered with egg by the end of the day. The final competitions were the three-legged race, which entailed much coordination and good counting skills, and the bag race which had everyone hopping around.

A great big “thank you” goes out to all the children who joined in so enthusiastically as well as to the parents who made the effort to bring their children out to the Centre.

The Camdeboo National Park will be running a second holiday programme on 5 and 6 January 2012.

Bookings are essential so don”t miss out! For further information please contact Amy-Lee Pollard or Rosemary Scheepers at the Camdeboo National Park.
